Jim Crowley Saturday Blog | Ayr Gold Cup Day
13:50 – Enfjaar
I’m off to Ayr for four rides, two in the Shadwell silks and two others, starting on Enfjaar in the Listed Doonside Cup. He’s run well all season, although I felt the trip was just a bit sharp for him at York last time, so the step back up a furlong is a plus here. Phantom Flight finished three places in front of us at York, so we need to reverse that running, but we’re three pounds better off so have a chance.
I think Ayr will suit him well, he got pushed wide at York and that was also against him, while I’m getting to know horse better with each run, he gave me a nice feel at Goodwood two runs ago, so I’m looking forward to this.
14:25 – Sergeant Pep
It’s always good to team up with Clive Cox, and while Sergeant Pep is a big price for the Silver Cup, he was a winner two runs ago, and a return to that form would give him an each-way chance. We’re drawn high in 17, but if there’s pace around us that draw shouldn’t be a major factor.
15:00 – Town And Country
This looks a lovely spare to have picked up, with this filly’s trainer, Henry De Bromhead, sure to have her spot on for this assignment.
She was a winner at Navan over five furlongs, and had run well without any luck on her debut over six furlongs, so the step back up to six here shouldn’t be an issue. She should improve for her last run as well, and can go very close here.
15:35 – Mostabshir
I’d been pushing for Mostabshir to drop down to six furlongs, and so I was pleased that he ran so well on his first try at that trip when finishing fourth in the Stewards’ Cup. He’s actually been dropped a pound for that run, which can’t be a negative, and as he’ll sharpen up for that first try at sprinting, and he’s always had the talent to win a big one, this could be his day.
