12:05 Newbury – Sunset Marquesa
She won nicely at Wincanton last time, having run into an impressive one at Uttoxeter first time up this season. We’ve always thought plenty of her, and would hope she’s one for Listed company in time, but for now we’ll see how she progresses through handicaps, starting here off a mark of 114 that I hope is fair. She should go well.
13:45 Newbury – Rightsotom
We were left scratching our heads after his first run of the season at Ascot, as he did not perform at all as we expected him to, even though it was his first run for a long while.
Whatever went wrong that day was put right at Doncaster last time though, when he won well, and justified our opinion of him. He has gone up eight pounds for that win, which won’t make life easy for him, but on a track that will suit him, I hope he can improve again and we can continue to climb the ladder with him.
14:55 Newbury – First Confession
This looks a very decent Coral Challow Hurdle, and we are stepping First Confession up in class in a big way, but he’s an Ascot winner, and rather than look to win a lesser race somewhere, we’ve decided to have a go at a Grade 1 pot.
One thing he will do is stay this trip well, so if any of these don’t see it home at the business end, he will be there to pick up the pieces. It’s a big ask we know, but there aren’t many races of this type, and his owners deserve to have a go. He could certainly be placed and in a Grade 1 that’s worth having a go, something we’ve never been afraid to do.
