WATCH: Cast No Shadow flies home to finish 2nd at Newcastle | Raceday Highlights
Everything was going smoothly until Persian Blue, the Roger Varian-trained 6/4 favourite at the time, broke loose under the front of the stalls, which meant there was a 15 minute delay after each horse had to be taken out of their starting stall and put back in again. Fortunately no horse was injured during the incident.
However, once the race officially got underway, Cast No Shadow broke well and was prominent throughout under jockey Jason Hart. He travelled nicely, but when they hit the two furlong marker, he got a little caught on his heels, which allowed the eventual winner (Monks Dream) and third-placed runner (Sports Coach) to steel a length or so on him.
As the race entered the final furlong, Cast No Shadow managed to claw back the defecit, staying on very strongly under a drive to agonisingly get beaten on the nod.
He may not have won, but the thrilling action gave his lucky 10 Owners for the Day plenty to shout and cheer about as they watched it live, and his 2nd place finish meant they got to share just over £1,408 in prize money.
It was a hugely encouraging run from the club's two-year-old colt, and there's plenty of hope he can go one step closer next time out.
Tune in to watch the full raceday highlights, including an insightful post-race interview with jockey Jason Hart.
