Cave Article could be set to continue over hurdles following his handicap debut at Fakenham

06 Nov 2024
Cave Article made his handicap debut over hurdles last Wednesday at Fakenham where he came home in fifth place.

Our gelding made the long trip from South Wales to Fakenham for the second time in recent weeks having missed out on his last proposed race there after the card was abandoned following the first race that day. Fortunately, everything was running smoothly in Norfolk this time around and his race, which was the first on the card, went ahead without any issues.

Cave Article was subject to plenty of support leading up to the race having opened up at a big price of around 16/1 and eventually going off at 10/3, so there seemed to be a few out there who thought his opening handicap mark was an attractive one.

Former three-time Champion Jumps Jockey, Brian Hughes, was booked to ride, and he had to rein Cave Article in a little during the opening stages of the race as our five-year-old began the contest with plenty of spring in his step. Once the pair had settled, they positioned in the middle of the pack, but as the race progressed, it appeared that Cave Article was struggling with the tight nature of the bends at Fakenham and at times he needed some encouragement from Hughes at times to keep him in position.

This wasn't doing Cave Article any favours, and despite still travelling fairly well before they made the turn to head towards the third from home, he began to get outpaced by the front runners and it was clear his race was run. Mersey Street from the Jonjo & A J O'Neill team and Hierro Sport under jockey Kielan Woods were the ones leading the way in the home straight, and it was the latter who came out on top in the end. Despite Cave Article not being able to finish in the top three, he wasn't disgraced back in fifth place and we're hopeful his first experience in handicap company will put him in good stead for his next contest.

Earlier this week we spoke to Christian Williams and he told us that he'll probably be looking to keep Cave Article over hurdles next time out, and that there are a few potential options on the table for his next run, including potential races at Exeter on the 24th, Taunton on the 28th and Musselburgh on the 29th.

Keep an eye on the Coral Racing Club for our next update from Christian Williams, plus your chance to attend Cave Article's next race as an Owner for the Day with our next competition.
