Jim Crowley – Newmarket July Festival Day One Preview

With four rides on the opening day of this year's Newmarket July Festival, will Jim Crowley end up in the winners enclosure? Check out his thoughts on each of his chances below.
14:25 Newmarket – Jasour
My first ride of the day is Jasour, for trainer Clive Cox, a trainer who wouldn’t be running a horse in a Group race if he didn’t think he’d do himself justice, so this is a lovely ride to have picked up.
He finished second on his debut, and then went to Nottingham and won his maiden. Both those runs were over five furlongs, but hopefully this extra furlong will be well within his range.
The form of his victory has been given a couple of boosts, so while there are some unbeaten colts in here, and some big yards are represented, as I say Clive isn’t a trainer to tilt at windmills, so while Jasour will need to take a step forward, at big odds he could go well.
15:35 Newmarket – Israr
Israr has been a little bit unlucky to finish second on both his starts this season. At Newbury first time up we had the beating of Bolshoi Ballet, only to get pipped by Haskoy right on the line, and then at York, the longer trip just found him out and he didn’t quite get home.
Adayar is clearly the one to beat here, but he’s got to bounce back from a defeat behind Mostahdaf at the Royal meeting, albeit he’s stepping back up in trip which should suit the Godolphin colt. However, if the favourite does fall short, my fellow has his optimum conditions and would be well-placed to take advantage.
16:10 Newmarket – Jumeirah Breeze
Jumeirah Breeze ran a massive race to finish second to a smart Godolphin filly here at Newmarket last month, so we know she will handle the track. She improved loads from her debut run to that second run, so if she can show more improvement along those lines then she could run a big race here.
16:45 Newmarket – Mostabshir
This is the race Baaeed won a couple of years ago, and while it may be hoping for too much to think we have another one as good as that star, Mostabshir is a lovely horse in his own right. We ran him in the St James’s Palace Stakes after an impressive York win, and he ran well at Ascot, finishing sixth but on ground that was rain-softened, and behind horses including the winner Paddington, who of course was an impressive winner of the Coral-Eclipse last weekend.
Quick ground will really suit, and although Imperial Emperor is favourite, he’s only won a Novice Stakes, and the second favourite, Nostrum, hasn’t run this year, so dropping down to Listed company, I think Mostabshir has an excellent chance.
