Phoenix Of Dreams battles back to to finish fifth at Newcastle | Raceday Highlights
Having lined up in stall one, it was set to be a tough task for Phoenix Of Dreams on the straight course at Gosforth Park and although he broke well initially, he did struggle to get into an early position with sufficient cover. Eventually he tucked in behind the eventual winner of the race, Spartan Fighter, in a share of fifth position.
As the race began to develop at the halfway point, it looked as though Phoenix Of Dreams was set to drop to the rear of the field, but he dug deep and stuck to his task well to retain his position and almost snuck fourth place on the line.
The result landed each of his 10 lucky Owners for the Day a share of £217 in prize money, making it two runs on the spin that he's collected earnings in and taking his total winnings to a shade under £15,000.
Here's what trainer Sean Quinn had to say about Phoenix Of Dreams' latest performance and what his plans are for our five-year-old in the coming weeks:
"Phoenix Of Dreams was fine this morning, he's come out of his race well and seems happy which is good news.
I took encouragement from the way he ran last night, but it does look like the time has come to step him up to seven furlongs now. We've obviously been toying with the idea for the last few weeks just because he doesn't necessarily have the turn of pace that you need to be a sprinter. Although that was the case again last night, he looked like he was going to drop backwards quite quickly around two furlongs from home, but he stuck to his guns and ran on strongly through the line, albeit one paced.
I was pleased with how settled he was in the early part of the race, he did take a bit of a grip right out of the gate but I think that's just his personality. He certainly wasn't trying to get free and like I say, he did settle in very nicely after those first couple of strides.
We ran off of 66 last night and I think the handicapper might look to drop him another pound for the Newcastle run. This will open up the door to potentially entering him into 0-65 contests, which will be considerably easier than the 0-70 and 0-75 races that we've been having to go for.
I haven't ruled out the Southwell race on Friday 20th February, so I'll keep an eye on the calendar to see what the best option is that's coming up, with Phoenix Of Dreams stepping up to seven furlongs being a certainty."
