WATCH: Vet pays Rockstar Icon a visit to assess his breathing following latest Newmarket effort

01 Oct 2024
Following Rockstar Icon's latest disappointing effort at Newmarket, trainer Oliver Cole decided to invite Alastair Welch [Vet] down to Whatcombe Stables to analyse our three-year-old's breathing to see if there were any abnormalities.

After breaking well from the stalls, Rockstar Icon raced prominently under jockey Hector Crouch throughout the first half of the race, and as they entered the final two furlongs, the pair looked to be in with a great chance of at least finishing in the top three or four. However, as they hit the furlong marker, Rockstar Icon weakened quickly out of contention and eventually came home in eighth place.

After the race, Oliver told us that he noticed that his breathing 'wasn't quite right' and that he could hear some irregular sounds, so he decided to get him scoped to see if they could find a better explanation for his below par finish to the race.

Tune in to our latest video to see how the procedure, which is called a Dynamic Endoscopy, took place and find out what Alastair had to say.

See below the latest update from Oliver Cole following the visit from the vet.

"In our update after his Newmarket run, we said we were going to have Rockstar Icon scoped, to check if there were any irregularities with his breathing that might have explained his below par run.  We’ve now carried out that examination [see video] and the vet has given us the results.

Whilst a couple of minor issues did show up, the vet is confident these are nothing out of the ordinary, and were not likely to be affecting Rockstar’s racecourse performances, and he did not recommend the need for any treatment.

As a result, our plan is to put a tongue-tie on him for his next race, as this will ensure his airways will be kept clear.  We’ll also step him up in trip, to a mile, or possibly even further, and look for ground with a bit more ease in it than Newmarket last time, as Hector Crouch did feel the good to firm going was against him.

It was definitely a worthwhile exercise to have him scoped, as we now know there aren’t any major problems with his breathing, and we can push on from here."
