Star Performers of the Weekend – Coral Racing Club Members have their say
As the flat season draws to a close, we were treated to yet another weekend of top quality performances, with the Newmarket and Ascot cards on Saturday standing out.
So on Monday we asked you, our Coral Racing Club members, to tell us who your Star Performer of the Weekend was and why.
Frankie Dettori scored his 500th winner at Newmarket onboard INSPIRAL in the Group 1 Sun Chariot Stakes, meanwhile at Ascot, EMARAATY ANA scored in fine fashion in the Listed Rous Stakes and AL QAREEM battled to victory in the Cumberland Lodge.
Check out what members had to say as we pick out some of the best entries below.
Rous Stakes – Emaraaty Ana
Emaraaty Ana opened Ascot's card on Saturday with a wonderful performance in the Listed Rous Stakes. Neil Callan settled him into a prominent position from the get-go before asking the question about a furlong from home. The gelding showed a great turn of pace to run on, eventually passing the winning post over a length and a half to the good.
Robert, from Tyne and Wear, echoed those thoughts, saying that "he showed everyone his class" with the way he ran on strongly in the closing stages of the race. Meanwhile George, from Hampshire, fancied him for the race earlier in the week having voted for him in last week's Banker of the Day Poll. Were you impressed by the seven-year-old's performance in the curtain raiser on Saturday?
Cumberland Lodge Stakes – Al Qareem
Al Qareem's battling victory in the first Group 3 of the day caught the eye of our members, with several complimenting his battling victory. After being ridden in second for the majority of the race, Clifford Lee pushed him to the lead with two furlongs to run. The gelding was headed and looked beaten a furlong out, before showing incredible tenacity to stay on and get back into the lead and win by a length.
Allan, and Christopher, from West Midlands, and Cheshire respectively, were both impressed by Al Qareem "showing tremendous guts to fight back when he was passed and looking beaten". Robert, from Cheshire, repeated those thoughts, saying "he never gave up and deservedly won". Was Al Qareem's come from behind victory your Star Performance this weekend?
Sun Chariot Stakes – Inspiral
This week's most popular winner was Inspiral, who helped to bring up Frankie Dettori's 500th winner at Newmarket, whilst claiming the Group 1 contest. John and Thady Gosden's filly was always close to the leading group during the early part of the race, before the retiring maestro pushed her along and sent her to the front with two furlongs to run. The victory was never in doubt and she was eased down inside the final furlong to win by a comfortable margin of over three lengths.
Brian, from Dundee, stated that Inspiral was "different class", and Sharon, from Devon, called the performance "simply inspiring" and it's hard to argue with that sentiment. Meanwhile Mark, from West Yorkshire, believed that Inspiral knew Frankie was going for 500 Newmarket winners, saying "it seemed the horse knew something and produced one of the best performances possible". Were you most impressed by Frankie's landmark victory?
Turf Mile Stakes (Keeneland) – Up To The Mark
We head stateside for the final Star Performer of the Weekend, with Up To The Mark's victory at Keeneland worth almost £500,000. The colt was held up in the final group for the early stages of the contest before Jose Ortiz found a gap for him before the furlong pole. He stayed on gallantly in the final stages before just getting up to win by a nose on the line.
Richard, from Cheshire, believes that performance cements him as "one of the best milers in the world" by putting in that run after a break, beating Charlie Appleby's Master Of The Seas in the process. Will you be watching if he takes on the Breeders Cup next?
Join us next Monday as we'll be back to ask you who your Star Performer of the Weekend was.
